CAN YOU PLAY IT ON MAC?

GameToMac lets you play Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition on your Mac with and against Windows players by running the Windows Steam version. You need an Apple Silicon Mac and macOS 26 or later. An official native Mac version is also available, but its multiplayer is limited to other Mac players. Playing with Windows friends is a key reason to choose GameToMac.

01 / THE RIGHT VERSION

Native Mac or Windows through GameToMac?

World’s Edge announced the native Apple Silicon edition on May 28, 2026, and confirmed that existing Steam owners can access it. If you simply want to play the native version, start with its current Mac requirements in Steam and Feral’s documentation. Install it through your regular macOS Steam client.

Choose GameToMac when you want to play with or against friends on Windows. It runs the Windows Steam version on your Mac, giving you access to multiplayer with Windows players. This is a separate installation from the native Mac version. Everyone should use Definitive Edition with matching game versions and compatible mods.

Both discussions concern Definitive Edition. Age of Empires II HD and the original release are different products. Keep that distinction in mind when reading older Mac tutorials or looking for your game in Steam.

Want to play with Windows friends?

Choose GameToMac to play the Windows Steam version with and against Windows players. The native Mac release supports multiplayer with other Mac players, as explained in Feral’s multiplayer FAQ.

03 / INSTALL AND PLAY

How to play Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition on Mac

  1. Choose the route you intend to use

For the native Mac version, use regular macOS Steam. For GameToMac’s Windows version, open GameToMac and select Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition.

  2. Prepare the GameToMac environment

Choose Get started, review the component license, and let setup finish. This prepares the game’s own Steam session.

  3. Sign in and install Definitive Edition

Sign in in the Steam window opened by GameToMac. Confirm I’m signed in in the app, choose Install with Steam, and keep Steam’s suggested library folder.

  4. Finish updates and launch

Let Steam complete downloading and verification. Return to GameToMac and choose Play now. Use the same route on later launches so you know which installation you are opening.

  5. Try a small skirmish first

Confirm that the map loads, units respond, audio works, and saving and reloading behave as expected. Then test the particular multiplayer mode you want to use with your friends.

Existing native and Windows installations can occupy separate space. Do not move or delete one while setting up the other without first checking where your saves and settings are kept.

04 / MULTIPLAYER

Play with Windows friends

If your friends play Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition on Windows, you can join them from your Mac using GameToMac. You run the Windows Steam version through GameToMac, so you can play together or compete against one another instead of being limited to the native Mac version’s multiplayer pool.

Install and launch the game through the Steam session opened by GameToMac. Ask your friends to finish their updates, check that everyone is on the same game version, and use compatible mods before creating or joining a lobby. Your friends continue using their Windows installation; they do not need GameToMac.

After a major game update, try a short match before planning a longer session. Updates can affect compatibility. If a lobby or match fails, note the game version, mode, enabled mods, and exact error so support can investigate.

05 / PERFORMANCE

Make the late game part of your test

A small opening is only a starting point

An empty Dark Age map is a lighter test than a large battle with many units. Begin with a small skirmish to check basic operation, then try a representative map size and population. If you only test menus, you have not measured how the match will feel.

Start without optional enhanced graphics if you are diagnosing long loads or poor responsiveness. Change one setting, restart if required, and repeat the same test. Resolution and graphics quality matter, but reducing them may not solve every slowdown in a large simulation.

Keep route and version information with your results

When sharing a result, say whether you used native macOS Steam or the Windows version through GameToMac. Include your Mac chip, memory, game version, map size, and any mods. These details prevent comparisons between two different setups from being mistaken for a contradiction.

No universal frame-rate claim is made here. A Mac meeting GameToMac’s platform requirement still needs settings appropriate to the match you want to play.

06 / TROUBLESHOOTING

Common edition and setup mix-ups

I already installed the Mac version

That installation belongs to macOS Steam. It does not automatically complete GameToMac’s Windows installation. Continue using the native version if it meets your needs, or install through GameToMac’s Steam window for this route.

A friend cannot see my lobby

Compare your platform route, exact game version, selected mode, and enabled mods. Finish pending updates before changing network settings. Record any lobby or connection error rather than assuming all editions share the same matchmaking pool.

Loading or selecting units feels slow

Note when it happens and whether it repeats after a normal restart. Try the same small skirmish without optional enhanced graphics or mods, keeping your saves intact. Send GameToMac Help the results and diagnostics if the issue persists.
